Week-end a Corpus Christi : visite du porte-avions!!

Par Sally & Florian :: 06/12/2007 à 0:40 :: H- Corpus Christi

Chers tous,

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Nous sommes sur un bateau, si, si...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Week-end in Corpus Christi!!!! vendredi 16 et samedi 17 novembre

Par Sally & Florian :: 04/12/2007 à 22:49 :: H- Corpus Christi

Hi folks,

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Le site officiel Pontiac dit d'ailleurs : "It's a new way of thinking. A new way of creating. Innovative design, striking styling and technical advancement brought together and infused in every detail. The results are an automobile with the refinement, performance and style to reshape old standards and create the new definition for design and performance".

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Regardez-moi ca si c'est-y pas un peu fier .... J'ai 220ch sous le capot, moi mossieur!! Au moins tout ca!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Le sombrero va bien a certaines...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

beaucoup moins a d'autres...  Ma che passa?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

La celebre photo du Lexington CV-2 en flammes

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

14 et 15 août : last days of the roadtrip

Par Sally & Florian :: 02/12/2007 à 20:45 :: C-2-6 Colorado Springs and back to Denver

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Notre route nous amene finalement au Garden of The Gods State Park, juste a cote de Colorado Springs...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

On voit pourquoi!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

A bientot!!!

Sunday nov 4th : Last day in San Fran : Maritime museum (3/3)

Par Sally & Florian :: 30/11/2007 à 10:30 :: G - San Francisco

I previously told you Sunday was a busy day... actually it was!
After crossing the Gloden gate bridge we took the bus along the bayside, to arrive eventually in the Pier zone, where all restaurants, museums dedicated to the bay and so on are located.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

oh and this is "Lombard street", considered the crookedest street in the world. there were so many tourist going down the street, and up from the other side, and down again etc etc...of course the more beautiful your car is, the best it is to be "seen".

In fact, Lombard is not the crookedest street in San Francisco, let alone the world. Vermont street, between 20th St and 22nd Street near the San Francisco General Hospital is the crookedest street in the city with only seven turns, but it is located in a much less picturesque location..ah bah on comprend mieux now ;p

Saturday, no 3rd :Let's go to Muir Woods National Park! by Sally :)

Par Sally & Florian :: 25/11/2007 à 8:23 :: G - San Francisco

Muir Woods is located in the Marin County, just across the San Francisco Bay : in other words, cross the Golden Gate Bridge, and you're almost there! This is why San Francisco is precisely such pleasant town : you don't need to drive for hours to find some nature...

We decided not to go to Yosemite because it was 1. too far away, 2. too cold to sleep in a tent there. So muir woods was the most pleasant destination need SanFran....thanks Morgan pour le tip ;p

But we first had to bring Georg at his work (yes even on saturday) to be able to take is car (une décapotable) to Muir woods. so we did the silicon valley again that morning;p

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Coming back to Sanfran, direction : golden gate bridge!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

(i'm very proud i could take such a picture with my camera...i just discovered the mode "macro"...héhé..tristan NO COMMENT !)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

this tree felt down...euh..sorry don't remember. what i remember is that the parc usually let the trees down and don't take them away as long as they're not dangerous. what's interesting about letting the tree like that is that you can really see the beauty and the largeness of the trees!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

"is anybody here?"

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

We will skip the bad part of the end of muir woods: the car wouldn't want to start when we came back. we tried for hours. So we had to call triple A (and georg by the way...oups..) so that they could towe our car. And good thing: he didn't charge for that, because i made a lot of conversation with the man :).LOL. here is the last time we could see the car that day (don't worry, georg managed to start the car the day after..)

Friday afternoon, November 2nd : Alcatraz!!!! by Sally

Par Sally & Florian :: 24/11/2007 à 10:07 :: G - San Francisco

Let's continue this busy day with one of the tops of our stay : The visit of Alcatraz Island!

We were lucky because the weather was beautiful and there was no fog on the San Francisco.. So we could enjoy the cross to the Island...

Below you'll find me (yes look precisely) at Fisherman's wharf, pier 39,a very "famous one". but to me it's only restaurants restaurants and "attrape touriste".lol

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

the weather was incredibly perfect.look at the view.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Sanfran bay is well known for its sea lions, we saw some of them but there were too fast for any pics, sorry :).

Below a lot of pictures from the SF bay, still the Oakland bridge, but without any fog this time.

and here the Golden Gate...

Arriving on the boat:)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

and...ALCATRAZ :). the picture is rare, because there is almost always fog and you hardly can see the island.. But this one was taken from the boat to the island...so it's not my camera which have a great zoom but the boat who is approaching alcatraz..

It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, then a military prison followed by a federal prison until 1963, when it became a national recreation area.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Because showing you just pictures from Alcatraz would be boring for you, I decided to explain you a little bit some historical things, if you don't know them already (sorry mama wenn du nicht verstehst !)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Because of its natural isolation in the middle of a bay, surrounded by cold water and strong sea currents, Alcatraz was soon considered by the U.S. Army as an ideal location for holding captives. The maximum number of inmates was 302

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I love taking pictures from the birds, when they come next to us:)

approaching the ROCK

The first European to discover the island was Juan de Ayala in 1775, who charted the San Francisco Bay and named the island "La Isla de los Alcatraces", which means "Island of the Pelicans".

and HERE WE GO

famous sentances of alcatraz:

IF YOU BREAK THE RULES YOU GO TO PRISON
IF YOU BREAK THE RULES OF THE PRISON , YOU GO TO ALCATRAZ

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

All privileges would be limited, and no single inmate, regardless of his public stature, would be given special rights or freedoms.

Guard's automobile:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

the alcatraz tour is very impressive and very attractive because we have an "audio tour" inside the cells, and ancient inmates as well as guards explain their everydaylife. it is amazing and breathtaking how they explain it. We imagine them very clearly. it is made realistic, i really enjoyed the tour and could do nothing but recommend it. It is interesting. I'll try to retranscript what I heard and give you some details.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

"what's your size?"

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

From 1934 to 1963 Alcatraz was the hardest, most severe outpost of the Federal Prison system. Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, Creepy Karpis, Birdman Stroud, are just a few of the names that became numbers in this wind-swept penitentiary.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Each prisoner would be assigned their own cell, and only the basic minimum life necessities would be given, such as food, water, clothing, and medical and dental care, no other things were given to them.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The prison routine was rigid and unrelenting, day after day, year after year. As quickly as a given privilege could be earned for good behavior, it could be taken away for the slightest infraction of the rules.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The inmates' day began when they were woken at 6:30 a.m., and they were given twenty-five minutes to clean their cells and stand to be counted. At 6:55 a.m. individual tiers of cells would be opened one by one, and the inmates would march in single line into the Mess Hall. They would be given only twenty minutes to eat, and then would be marched out to line up for their work assignments. The methodical cycle of the prison routine was unforgiving. It never changed through the years, and was very precise and reliable.

(kitchen below). notice in the back, the knifes, there were in the box so that if one is missing, it could immediatly be seen. But even if those secured measures, it happened one time that a prisoner took it to and tried to kill one of the guards.

some things must be clarified here: the food at alcatraz was very good, if it wasn't the best of all the nation's prison. The guards and their families ate the same foods as the inmates. There had all their nutritive requirements.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Inmates would be given restricted access to the Prison Library, but no newspapers, radios, magazines, or other non-approved reading materials would be allowed during their term in Alcatraz. (below the library)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Wardens from the various Federal penitentiaries were interviewed, and they were permitted to send their most incorrigible inmates into secure confinement on The Rock. (image below).

there were 2types of secure confinement: one in the dark (on the ground level) and one on the first floor, which was juste confinement from the other inmates. but those actually liked the place, because it was the only one in the prison were there was sun in the morning, which was very important for those men.

AAAHHHHHHH take me out of here!!!!!!!!!! :P

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Sometimes the prisoners could hear the music and voices from fetes at the yacht clubs accross the way. Especially on New Years Eve...

Visitation rights would have to be earned by the inmates, and no visits would be allowed for the first three months of residence at Alcatraz.

Escape Attemps

Thirty-four prisoners were involved in 14 attempts
two men trying twice
seven were shot and killed
two drowned,
five were unaccounted for,
and the rest were recaptured.
Two prisoners made it off the island but were returned, one in 1945 and one in 1962.

Battle of Alcatraz
in 1946, in which three prisoners and two guards were killed and two prisoners were later executed for their participation in the battle. We were explained on the audio guide how they managed to do it, it is really interesting. but i'm not saying anything here, i let you the surprise to discover it by yourself when you visit the Rock (or just google it if u really wanna know now !).

The most famous escape attempt involved Frank Morris and brothers John and clarence Anglin, popularized in the movie "escape from Alcatraz" The three disappeared from their cells on june 1962 in one of the most intricate escapes ever devised. they left papier maché dummies in their bed (ingenious isn't it?)  and escaped from a hole made with a spoon and into the corridor i showed you above.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

what you see above, on the island are the family's headquarters, each guard could have his familiy on the Rock, with wife and children.

I hope you enjoyed the story and the pictures. We took more than 100, but i had to select some of them so that the post is not too long for you guys :).

So now, back to SanFran!

With such a weather, i'd take my boat out in the bay too ;p

13 et 14 août : Une aventure...reposante :) by Sally

Par Sally & Florian :: 23/11/2007 à 19:34 :: C-2-5 Cripple creek et sa mine dor

Ca me laisse sans voix..

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

here we go

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

ci dessous c moi hihi

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

regardez comme qu'on est heureux

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Quelle aventure

Friday morning, November 2nd: Japanese Tea Garden!

Par Sally & Florian :: 22/11/2007 à 20:12 :: G - San Francisco

Friday was a busy day for us...like every day i should say!

We decided to go to the Golden Gate Park in the morning, and to Alcatraz in the Afternoon...

But let me tell you : This post will be one of the most beautiful you've ever seen on this blog... The Japanese Tea Garden was simply wonderful in the morning light...

We decided to buy a "one day card" to take all the cable car we wanted (one ride is already 5dollars!!!!!) as well as the bus and tram :). Let's start with the cable car, view from the inside:

And here is the entrance of the golden gate park. It is such a wonderful park, much better/nicer/cleaner than central park in NYC (to our mind). You really feel you are anywhere but in a large metropol.

Durango - Silverton - Black Canyon by Sally

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Sans vouloir t'offenser Philippe, of course :).

On dérange?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

for those who are interested in : little history about the canyon

Torrence & Fellows were the first explorers to successfully navigate the Black Canyon, hiking and swimming with the assistance of rubber air mattresses. The movie in the visitor center is about them.

But more generally:
The Gunnison River drops an average of 43 feet per mile (8 m/km) through the entire canyon, making it one of the steepest mountain descents in North America. In comparison, the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon drops an average of 7.5 feet per mile (1.4 m/km).
The Black Canyon is so named on account of its steepness which makes it difficult for sunlight to penetrate very far down the canyon. As a result, the canyon walls are most often in shadow, causing the rocky walls to appear black. At its narrowest point the canyon is only 40 feet (12 meters) across at the river.
The Ute Indians had known of the canyon to exist for a long time before the first Europeans saw it. By the time the United States gained independence in 1776, two Spanish expeditions had passed by the canyons. In the 1800s, the numerous fur trappers searching for beaver pelts would have known of the canyon's existence but they left no written record. By the late 1800s and into the early 1900s, the canyon had been thoroughly explored and while the first explorers came for commercial success and wealth, the later visitors came to see the canyon as an opportunity for recreation and personal enjoyment.

The area was established as a U.S. National Monument on March 2, 1933 and made into a National Park on October 21, 1999.

And this is great :)

-Texas is the second largest state after Alaska (and is -of course- much bigger than France and Germany) and the crowdest after California (who would have thought that? i thought-when arriving here- that i'll only find desert and cowboys) in 2006 the state has an estimated population of 23,507,783
- Oh here is the reason: half of Texas' population lives in Houston and Dallas/forth worth
- Largest cities in Texas: Houston, Dallas/Forth Worth, Austin, San Antonio and El paso.
- Texas boundaries are : Mexico, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansa, Oklahoma
- Forests cover about 13% of Texas
- Texas' 230 000 farms and ranches cover about 76% of the state's land area
- Texas is nation's leading oil  producing state
- The state's name derives from táyshaʔ, a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai , which means "friends" or "allies".What? you don't know what Caddoan language is? :) Caddoan languages are families of Native American languages.
- Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. In 1845, it joined the United States as the 28th state. Texas is one of only four states that was an independent nation before becoming a constituent state of the U.S.
- Texas boasts that "Six Flags" have flown over its soil: the national flags of Spain, the Fleur-de-lis of France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America.
- In 2006, Texas had a gross state product of $1.09 trillion, the second highest in the U.S. after California

Austin

- The name comes from Stephen F. Austin : (November 3, 1793 – December 27, 1836), known as the "Father of Texas," led the second and ultimately successful colonization of the region by the United States
Austin is the capital of the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Travis County.
- As of the 2006 U.S. Census estimate, Austin has a population of 709,893
- Austin was selected as the No. 2 Best Big City in "Best Places to Live" by Money magazine in 2006 (euh comment vous dire….BREF…)
- Austin's official slogan promotes the city as "The Live Music Capital of the World", a reference to its status as home to many musicians and music venues
- In recent years, many Austinites have also adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird"; this refers partly to the eclectic and progressive lifestyle of many Austin residents, but is also the slogan for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses and resist excessive commercialization (you’ll find a lot of people with a TSHIRT « keep austin weird » here).

The University of Texas at Austin

- The Texas Constitution of 1876 mandated that the state establish a university "at an early day," calling for the creation of a "university of the first class," The University of Texas.

- In 1881, Austin was chosen as the site of the main university.

- The university opened its doors on September 15, 1883.

- Today, the university encompasses about 350 acres (1.4 km²) on its main campus.

- The university is home to seven museums and 17 libraries, which hold over eight million volumes

- U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks Texas as the best public university in the state of Texas.

- A 2005 report by USA Today ranked UT Austin "the number one source of new Fortune 1000 CEOs (Thank God we came here…now we have a chance..LOL).

- in 2004, The Times Higher Education Supplement listed Texas as the fifteenth-best university worldwide

How enter UT?
As a state public university, UT follows Texas state law under Housebill 588, also known as the top ten percent law. This law states that a Texas resident graduating in the top 10% of their senior class from an accredited Texas high school will be guaranteed admission when they submit a complete application by the deadline
=> This Fall Semester : out of 27,232 applications received 13,781 students were admitted. (this does NOT include Florian and I! LOL.)

Our school: The Red Mc Combs School of Business
-    The McCombs School includes about 4,500 undergraduates and was founded in 1922

-    On May 11, 2000, businessman Red McCombs announced a $50 million donation to the University of Texas at Austin. In his honor, the College of Business Administration and the Graduate School of Business were renamed the Red McCombs School of Business.

-    Prior there were just names : GSB (Graduate School of Business) and CBA (College of Business Administration)

-    McCombs School of Business ranked thirteenth in the country on BusinessWeek

-    The McCombs Professional Program in Accounting (PPA) and Master in Professional Accounting (MPA) programs are consistently recognized as the best in the nation by the Public Accounting Report

-    Most of its programs are ranked as top 5. McCombs is the only school to have every undergraduate business program ranked as top 10.

Our song
Each University has a song. At UT we have a very special one : The eyes of Texas.
Here is the song:
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
    All the live long day.
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
    You cannot get away.
Do not think you can escape them,
At night, or early in the morn'.
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
    'Till Gabriel blows his horn!

-The song was written in 1903 by John Sinclair.

Austin en qq chiffres et..photos by Sally

Par Sally & Florian :: 20/11/2007 à 18:46 :: D- Austin

        - NEW MEXICO...à venir...on espère

Keskun breztel, ben voila

Voila a quoi ressemble le restau :)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Oh qu'il est content:)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

On est content:) Vive le mushroom's :)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Voilou.

- une cérémonie militaire

The motto is simple: EVERYBODY, every single person in austin is burnt orange during game day...usually everyone beside us when we forgot there was a game.
Very very impressive. Voici qq photos

Completed in 1888 as the winning design from a national competition, the Capitol's style is Renaissance Revival, based on the architecture of 15th-century Italy and characterized by classical orders, round arches and symmetrical composition. The structural exterior is "sunset red" granite, quarried just 50 miles from the site. Additional structural support is provided by masonry walls and cast iron columns and beams. The foundation is limestone. Texas paid for the construction not in dollars, but in land: some three million acres in the Texas Panhandle that would later become the famous XIT Ranch.

An extraordinary edifice by any measure, the 1888 Texas Capitol is the largest in gross square footage of all state capitols and is second in total size only to the National Capitol in Washington, D.C. Like several other state capitols, the 1888 Texas Capitol surpasses the National Capitol in height, rising almost 15 feet above its Washington counterpart.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The Senat again (whitout its star lol). 31 senators meet here during Texas Legislative sessions to work with the house of representatives enacting the laws of texas. 1 sénateur représente environ 700 000 texans.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

 hihi

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Thursday, November 1st! Let's walk in San Francisco!

Par Sally & Florian :: 20/11/2007 à 17:47 :: G - San Francisco

After the so special day spent on the Google Campus, thursday was devoted to the visit of San Francisco...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

We decided to walk in the streets of San Francisco almost all day long... first, we went to market street, which is kind of main street of Downtown San Fran. But to reach Market Street, you have to climb and climb down two hills!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is San Francisco when the morning fog is still there : you can't see nothing but grey between the buildings! Hopefully, we expected the fog to leave during our stay... actually november is one of the best months to go in San Fran, because during summer the fog almost never leave!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Sun eventually arrived... so that we could expect to warm a little bit!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is the entrance of Chinatown... These gates were offered at the beginning of the 20th century by the government of China... With nore than 120,000 people, San Francisco is the largest asian community outside Asia... Lots of the people leaving here are descendants of the chinese workers, the coolies, that came here to build the pacific railways...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is the oldest church of San Francisco, it has miraculously survived the 1906 earthquake. We saw there some impressive pictures of the neigbourhood before and after the earthquake... almost  any building remained intact after this catastrophe!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is Chinatown... I couldn't see that much difference with my "rue de Belleville" in Paris! same shops on the sidewalks, same trucks, same crowd, same noise!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is a typical San Fran street, with the cable-car lines...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

In the afternoon, after a little nap and a pizza ordered at Uncle Toni's, we decided to go to the Telegraph Gill and the Coit Tower from where we could see some overviews of San Francisco Bay...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

When there's no fog, here's what you can see from the hills! The bay and the Bay Bridge...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

To go to the Coit Tower, you obviously have to climb...

we did not climb Coit Tower because a fee was charged, however we enjoyed the view on the bay and the fog that had not completely faded away...

This is the Golden Bridge...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And this is the bay... don't even imagine the price of the appartments which have such a beautiful sight!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is Oakland Bridge...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Under the clouds is Alcatraz... we will visit this island soon!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

After telegraph Hill we climbed down to the Marina of San Francisco, its Maritime museums and among them these two particular boats : The USS Pampanito, a 2nd WW submarine...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

But also the USS Jeremiah o'Brien, a liberty ship a saw in 1994 in Rouen... i was very touched to see her here! But i won't start talking you about the 2nd WW, this could take me hours and hours...

San Francisco uses some 40's and 50's european tramways that were abandonned when all european cities ceased to use this mode of transportation; now all cities want to have tramways, but San Francisco has kept these ones which give the city a nostalgic touch...

As the night was here it was time for us to go back home after a long day... but for some inhabitants it was time for sports!

Wednesday, Oct 31th : Halloween in San Francisco!!

Par Sally & Florian :: 19/11/2007 à 23:00 :: G - San Francisco

Or at Google, i'd better say...

Actually we spent the whole day at the Google campus to attend the Halloween party... we were expecting something special, and it was !!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

We had to take a train to meet Georg which had left San Fran earlier in the morning. We decided to have a walk to the station so that we can discover the town on our way.

As usually, there was a lot of fog in San Fran, which makes the city look totally different....

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Of course the cable cars were still here...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Hope the picture makes you estimate the downslope of the street...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

San Francisco is also characterized by these beautiful victorian-style houses

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Eventually we reached the station and took our train to go to Mountain View, the town in which is located the google campus.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The inside of the train... very different from french trains!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Georg picked us at the station and was already well disguised...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Everybody at the Google party was disguised... even the pets! By the way, i did not tell you in the last post, but as crazy it may be, pets are allowed at work on the google campus...

Let's now start an overview of all the makeups and costumes...

After a short ride in Palo Alto and a visit of the Stanford University we eventually came back home, really exhausted but happy o the day and still suprised of how the Americans know how to have fun!

Tuesday, Oct 30st : Let's go to San Francisco!!!

Par Sally & Florian :: 14/11/2007 à 0:10 :: G - San Francisco

Hey yall!

Here's the first post about one of our most exciting trips so far, i mean San Francisco!!!

In these posts we will tell you what we've done and visited during these 6 days in SF from Tuesday to monday...

But first of all Sally and i would like to say how sorry we are about the oil split that occured a few days ago in SF when a South Korean ship hit the Bay Bridge...  So horrible to see that The Alcatraz island we visited just a few days ago is now surrounded by oil and can no longer be visited!!!

But Anyway, let's try to concentrate on our trip and we'll try to show you how beautiful the SF bay area can be when everything's fine... and when there's no fog obviously!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

First step of our trip... obviously the airport! Here Sally is already preparing herself for an oncoming nap...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Our plane : A Mc Donnel DOUGLAS (private joke for the Bonne's Family... hope you understand!)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The interior of the plane : not so crowded!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here's the safety guidelines : notice that if you have to leave the plane in case of emergency, the hostess will push you in the back! So if you have to jump, please be sure that there is no hostess behind you!!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Austin from the Airport...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Austin from the sky... here the picture is too small but we still could see the university and its tower from here...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

We flew over big deserts most of time...

I took this picture to ensure that the wing was still there...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The little circles are irrigated fields...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Once we arrived, Georg, Sally's german friend, picked us up at the San Jose airport  and then brought us to the Google Campus in the Silicon Valley...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here's the only picture you will see from the Google Campus, as taking pictures was strictly forbidden... The Google Campus is really amazing : more than 14 restaurants and cafeteria to eat since 7 am in the morning 'till 8pm, a gym, a pool, some free bikes and electric motos to cross the site, some "energy bars" with so much M&M's.... really amazing!!!! But here are working the top ingeneers in the world.. so you have to attract them! But we will talk again about Google later...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Later we eventually arrived in San Francisco.. This single picture gives you an idea of the streets here... really amazing!  if you don't turn your wheels toward the sidewalk when you park, you can be fined!!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Georg nicely gave us his room... he had had a lot of goodies from Google.... some of them quite funny, not to say ridiculous!!!

We really had a nice sleep as the room was really quiet..we were therefore ready for our first day of visit of San Francisco, the city we felt in love with!

Sunday, October 21th and Monday Oct 22th: Last days in Houston!

Par Sally & Florian :: 12/11/2007 à 22:31 :: F - Houston

Like we say in French, even beautiful stories have an end, so we had to leave Houston on Monday, Oct 22th, but before that we spent an other restful day on Sunday...

After a morning spent doing almost... nothing but having a nice breakfast, the Ethun proposed to make us visit downtown Houston by car... Of course we accepted, and here's what we saw :

Houston have some ground transportation, but the very hard heat that people endure most of time during the year has entailed the construction of a huge network of tunnels, underground malls and so on, so that you can leave all day in the A/C, from your house to your car, your office, the stores, your office, your car and eventually your house!!! In France we would call that " La chaine du froid" ;)

After that visit we decided to see some museums, the above one, The Menil Collection containing some beautiful Picasso paintings...

The Menil were a rich texan family that decided to donate some beautiful pieces of their collection to museums so that people can admire it...

Here's the building that hold the collection...

We also went to visit the Byzantine Chapel and the Rothko Chapel, two little chapels in which of course it was not allowed to take some pictures!
